Anti-retroviral drugs can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by infected people who start taking the drugs right after the diagnosis. Thus the risk to infect a HIV-negative partner can be reduced by 96 percent.

1,763 couples were tested, of which one partner was HIV-positive and the other was uninfected. Only one partner of a HIV-positive patient who took the drugs was infected during a five year trial, while 27 were infected without anti-retroviral drugs.
""This breakthrough is a serious game changer and will drive the prevention revolution forward. It makes HIV treatment a new priority prevention option,"" said the executive director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS).
